DC Native Kwame Shaka Opare Brings New Approach to West African Dance to November Dance Series at Joe’s Movement Emporium
Four-Week Series & The Process: Creative Journey Through Movement for Dancers of All Levels

Mount Rainier, MD, October 15, 2017— This November, the inaugural Chuck Davis Emerging Choreographer Fellow and award-winning choreographer Kwame Shaka Opare will teach a four-week West African Dance Series, along with a special offering of The Process at Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mount Rainier, MD. This highly dynamic and energetic technique and repertory class combines the tradition of West African forms with modes of additional dance techniques, exploring the new realms of African dance and choreography in the contemporary dance field. The four-week class will be held in November on the following Mondays: November 6, 13, 20, and 27. Each session is $20, and dancers of all levels are encouraged to attend.

“My workshops are always taught in a manner that make it accessible to everyone. So, no matter whatever level you think you’re at, my excitement about teaching is to share what I’ve learned with whomever is in the room at that moment. This allows us to create something new together, and that’s when the magic happens,” says Kwame Shaka Opare.

Additionally, on Saturday, November 11, Opare will teach The Process: A Creative Journey Through Movement, which utilizes dance and movement as a way for people of varying ages and levels of experience to learn to dance out their own personal stories. For example, in a previous session of The Process, the group used their movement explorations to convey their feelings and heal from first-hand experiences as Baltimore residents following the death of Freddie Gray.

“The Process series is therapeutic, affirming, and empowering,” said a past participant of The Process. Participants will be led through movement experiences that give them access to their own powerful inner stories and expressiveness.
